Interview With Julia Goldsmith “Your Relationship with Art”

April 22, 2024

What drove you to start making art?

I was driven to start remaking art after many years of working and bringing up a family. I did art a level in the 1980s and have always carried on with smaller acts of creativity but when the pandemic hit and I had a little more time available I undertook a foundation allowed by a BA in Fine Art.

What drives you create the art that you create – does it symbolise anything for you?

My arts is about using what is available and overlooked and finding ways to bring them together to create new meaning. I enjoy the layer meanings of found objects and how they are re-used. My work is underpinned by a sustainable ethos and I rarely use new materials as there are enough things in this world already to be able to make art with.

What made you choose to get an education in art?

I wanted to get an arts education as I had missed out on going to art college when I was younger and I wanted to have the experience of making art in a supported environment with access to tutors other students and workshops. It was also a way to define and legitimise the process. I would not have given myself 4 years of time to create art without that structure. I also felt quite naive about the way contemporary art works and wanted to become educated about the world of art.

Is your art your full time job or do you have a side job – if so is it art related?

My husband and I run a video production company which specialises in Participatory Video. So I currently do this as well as trying to keep my solos art practice going.

Have you learned ways to sell your art or profit from it?
No I haven’t learnt to sell my work as it’s not often a piece which could be taken and hung on a wall. I think to earn money I would need to seek commissions or apply for funded projects. Do you exhibit work in gallery’s and if so.
How did you get noticed by the gallery to be invited to exhibit?
I am currently showing an installation at the Sidney Nolan Trust in Herefordshire this was a result of a residency I did at the exhibitions there. Other exhibitions have been linked to pop up shop initiative in Hereford. Previously the exhibitions have been linked to my BA course. I have entered and shown in a couple of open entry exhibitions but have not been invited as yet to exhibit beyond the Nolan Trust.
What thing have you done to gain a larger following on social media?
I really only do Instagram and am less and less happy to use it as a way to share my work. I find it a drain on my head space and dislike it’s addictive qualities. I plan to set up a website soon. But I understand this will need to be promoted via social media. What is something you would like to do as an artist? As an artist I would really like the opportunity to create work on a bigger scale in spaces which interact more directly with the architecture
How do you think you should go about achieving this?
I could achieve this by approaching places that take my interest and proposing an intervention. Or by creating a project which would involve the community which I could seek funding for.
